Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority cut borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year amid economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release notes. “Price increases has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to assess employment trends, including the count of employment gains added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in August.

The figure of positions created to the market in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was set to publish last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the shutdown began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its inflation report for September that indicated that prices are going up, although slowly. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
