Viral video clips seemed to capture Jones flashing his middle finger toward opposing supporters, though he insists he was actually signaling approval to Dallas supporters in attendance as his team secured a 37-22 victory.
“It was regrettable. That was kind of an interaction with our fans out in front of us,” Jones stated during a Tuesday interview. “There was a large group of Cowboys fans—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The entire stadium was filled with excitement for the Cowboys.”
He further emphasized that the signal was completely unintentional, happening amid the elation following the team’s last score. “I just put up the incorrect digit,” he remarked. “It was inadvertently done. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it accidental, you can. However, it got resolved pretty quick.”
Historical Context for Proprietor Penalties
This incident isn’t the first time an league proprietor has been fined for inappropriate behavior. Recent cases involve:
